Convenience

One of the simplest forms of similarity is that of convenience. It is the similarity that results from layers taking on each other’s form. For example the shape of the island of Jamaica is determined by the tension between the height of the land and the level of the sea. The land is shaped by the sea around it, and the sea is shaped by the land it embraces. The sea is, as it were, hollowed out by the island.
